Mosswell Filtered Shower Head — Takes the Chlorine Out on the Way Through

Your water is treated long before it reaches you. That is a good thing — right up until you stand in it.

Municipal water is chlorinated so it stays safe in the pipes. By the time it reaches your shower the chlorine has done its job. What is left has nothing to do but sit on your skin and hair for ten minutes a day, in heat, as steam.

This is a shower head and a 20-stage filter in a single housing. It takes the chlorine out on the way through.

The four stages that do the real work

Twenty stages sounds like a lot. Four of them do the work, and we would rather tell you which.

KDF-55. A copper-zinc alloy. Water passing over it converts free chlorine into harmless chloride, and pulls out heavy metals — lead, mercury, cadmium — along the way. It keeps working at shower temperature, which is precisely where ordinary carbon filters start to fall away.

Calcium sulfite. The media used for dechlorination in municipal pools. Effective in hot water, and fast enough to keep up at full flow.

Coconut-shell activated carbon. Catches organics and the smell with them. Rated to one micron.

Vitamin C. A second pass at any chlorine and chloramine the first three miss.

Around those four: stainless steel mesh and PP cotton at both ends of the cartridge for rust, sediment and grit, and ceramic and mineral beads making up the balance of the twenty.

What changes

Chlorine, chloramine, and the flat chemical smell that comes with them. Rust, sediment and grit carried by older pipework. Traces of heavy metals — lead, mercury, cadmium, iron.

The water feels different. Less of the tightness and squeak that heavily chlorinated water leaves on skin and hair. This is a change in the water, not a treatment for you — we will not tell you it does more than that.

Five settings, and none of them are weak

Rain. Mist. Massage. Rain and mist together. Rain and massage together.

The filter sits inline, above the head, and does not throttle the flow — 8 litres a minute, about 2.1 gallons, within the US standard. A removable flow limiter is fitted if you want it gentler. The nozzles are self-cleaning silicone: rub them with a thumb and the limescale comes off.

It fits your shower. It takes about two minutes.

Standard G1/2" thread — the universal size across North America and Europe. It goes on the existing shower arm by hand. Washers and thread tape are in the box, and no tools are needed.

Rinse the new cartridge under a tap for twenty seconds before first use to flush loose carbon dust. Run it upside down and rinse again. That is the whole installation.

It ships with a spare. That is the point.

Two cartridges in the box — one fitted, one waiting. Roughly every three to four months for a typical household, the cartridge unscrews and a fresh one drops in. The filter is new again. You are not replacing the shower head.

That is about eight months of filtered water before you buy anything. When you do, replacement cartridges come in packs of four.

What this filter does not do

We would rather you know before you buy than after.

• It does not remove fluoride. No shower filter at this size does, whatever the listing says. Fluoride removal needs activated alumina or reverse osmosis.
• It does not permanently soften hard water. It reduces scale-forming deposits and the metals that come with them. It is not a water softener and will not replace one.
• It is not a drinking-water filter. It is built for showering.
• It will not fix a low-pressure shower. It will not make one worse either.
